Artist Hilde Hauan Johnsen talks plant dyeing at her cabin in the Arctic – The Vessel

In this film, we visit Hilde Hauan Johnsen at her summer cabin in Berg, Northern Norway/Sápmi, in her outdoor studio where she prepares a yellow dye from birch leaves. We also encounter Hauan Johnsen’s artwork Colour Prism of Nature 1, created using plant dyes from the borders of Palestine and Israel, and Norway and Russia. Through her method of foraging plants and creating dyes, Hilde Hauan Johnsen’s textile artworks become archives of different places and landscapes. The film is produced by The Vessel (Norwegian Crafts) and Ingun Alette Mæhlum. The film features a unique music track courtesy of Sámi musician, singer and juoigi Mari Boine.
